I've been thinking about a book for some time now. Britain is a country of deep and hidden histories. Stories that are buried but present in the architecture around us, built up in the silted granite nooks and crannies.
I want to tell the stories of these stopped clocks we've been documenting. Each clock has it's own story, but I think it's perhaps even more important to tell the stories that people have about them. The clock at
St Leonards. Church in Shoreditch sits in the middle of a large and leafy green garden centuries old. How many couples had their first kiss sitting on a bench there? How many were married underneath the ornate gilded clock inside?
I don't anticipate that finding these stories will be easy, actually I see myself doing rather a lot of standing in the street coaxing people to talk to me, but perhaps you can help. Do you have a story related to a stopped clock local to you? Do you know someone who does? If you would like to help please pass this post along!
